The Pike River coal mine board has rebutted allegations that money woes compromised safety at the mine.

Meanwhile, Grey District Mayor Tony Kokshoorn yesterday said he had heard of mine-safety fears before.

Mr Kokshoorn said he would support holding a commission of inquiry. "There's no question in my mind there's got to be an inquiry."

All roads led back to the gas levels, which was why the search and rescue mission hadn't begun.

Mr Kokshoorn was approached yesterday by Gerry Morris of Greymouth, who said he had heard some contractors didn't want to work in the mine because they believed it was unsafe.

Well, it seems that there are very few mines no that ARE safe. A lot of the times these disasters are because of money and not following regulations.

I do hope this story has a good ending like the one in Chile.

We have insight and hindsight...but rarely foresight.

Typical problems in many developing countries. Malaysia often has tragedies like this....Hope all goes well with the inquiry.

I think miners always run the risk of being trapped in collapsed tunnels. We had coalmines in the Netherlands and at that time there were always casualties.
I hope that the people involved will be rescued.
Thanks for your visit. Yes we also have Santa, but he is not as popular as Saint Nicholas. After all he is invented by immigrants who celebrated Saint Nicholas' Eve in their homelands. Santa is no bishop like ST.Nicholas.

Thank you Ann, for confiding in us. Yes we have been visiting each other now for some time. We share good things but also the sad events.. It's a dark and grim day for New Zealand, I am so sorry for all the relatives of the miners.I heard now that there are no survivors. I understand that this time is especially difficult for you.
